CESEC Working Group Meets in Budapest

Budapest hosted the September meeting of the CESEC (Central and South-Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity) European Union working group, with FGSZ Natural Gas Transmission Ltd. serving as host. Convened by the European Commission, the forum brought together transmission system operators and energy infrastructure operators from the region to discuss current issues related to the development of Central and South-Eastern European energy infrastructure and the strengthening of regional cooperation.

The discussions focused on several key topics, including the implementation of the REPowerEU objectives, diversification of gas supply sources, promotion of market integration, as well as the current status of natural gas storage facilities and the growing role of the LNG market. Participants also reviewed opportunities for enhanced cooperation among transmission system operators and assessed progress on priority regional infrastructure projects.

The future of the Vertical Gas Corridor initiative was another key item on the agenda. Following the extension of the cooperation to North Macedonia and Serbia, the participating transmission system operators are now working on optimizing existing infrastructure, expanding cross-border capacities, and increasing the commercial attractiveness of the corridor.

The meeting reaffirmed that natural gas infrastructure continues to play a vital role in safeguarding regional security of supply, diversifying energy sources, and enhancing system resilience. It also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and cross-border infrastructure development in shaping the future of Europe’s energy supply.
